Prep Cheer is perfect for athletes who…

My child loved Novice and wants a bigger season.

After experiencing Novice, some athletes are ready for more time with their team and more opportunities to compete. Prep gives them a full season to learn, practice and refine a routine together. They’ll experience the preparation that goes into competition and the satisfaction of seeing their teamwork come together.

Four Prep Cheer athletes standing ready at the start of their routine
A Prep Cheer athlete performing a jump during her routine
Prep Cheer athletes holding a stunt at Cheer for the Cure
The Prep Cheer team hitting stunts across the competition floor
Prep Cheer athletes holding two flyers in a pyramid
Three Prep Cheer athletes cheering at the end of their routine

Give them something to be proud of.

Every practice brings them closer to the athlete — and teammate — they’re becoming.

Your Questions, Answered

How is Prep different from Novice?
Prep is a full-season program with more training and competitions than Novice. Athletes train four hours over two days each week and attend four competitions, developing more demanding skills as they’re ready. It’s a meaningful step up in attendance, preparation and team responsibility.
How do I get placed on a Prep team?
Prep team placement begins with a tryout or assessment. Contact the gym by emailing team@cheercorejags.ca to arrange an individual assessment. Athletes attend assessments and level practices before coaches confirm the best placement for them. Once your athlete receives their placement, you can register for the season.
Is tumbling required?
Prep builds on foundational tumbling such as cartwheels, handstands and rolls. Level 1 develops walkovers and connections, while Level 2 develops handspring skills. Coaches use assessments to understand your athlete’s current skills and recommend an appropriate placement. They don’t need to arrive with every skill already mastered.
How do I know if my child is ready for Prep?
Prep may be a good fit if your child has strong foundational skills, can learn and remember choreography and is ready to train consistently with a team. An assessment gives coaches the opportunity to recommend the level and team that will support their development.
How important is attendance?
Consistent attendance is essential. Stunt groups, formations and choreography depend on every athlete being present, and missing practice affects the whole team. Families should be prepared to prioritize both weekly practices and competition dates.
Is Prep a full-season commitment?
Yes. Athletes commit to their team for the full season, including two practice days each week and four competitions. This gives the team enough time to build, perform and continue improving its routine together.
Will my child compete against other teams?
Yes. Prep teams U12 and up perform a scored routine at competitions and receive feedback on areas such as technique, execution and overall performance. Coaches help athletes understand the process and focus on delivering their strongest routine together.
Can my child spend more than one season in Prep?
Absolutely. Athletes develop at different rates, and there is no expectation that everyone progresses on the same timeline. Most athletes spend more than one season in Prep, to strengthen their skills, confidence and consistency.
