More Than Cheer · Episode 1
A millimetre can be the difference between a hit and a fall.
Episode 1 of More Than Cheer opens the 2026–2027 season at CheerCore Jags, a small-town all-star cheerleading and tumbling program in Collingwood, Ontario.
It would be easy to think this season is about that margin for error. It isn’t.
The margin for error at competition level is real, and the training reflects it. But the standard behind that training was never really about the stunt. It’s about the athletes underneath it.
CheerCore Jags trains athletes strong enough to trust each other by building humans first. Strength in the weight room. Trust in a stunt. A shared standard of excellence that runs through every practice. All of it exists for one reason: to build people who can handle pressure, on and off the mat.
This philosophy comes from Coach Brianne and Coach Tianna, opening the season and setting the tone for everything the program is about to prove. By the end of it, the “rah rah” cheerleader stereotype doesn’t stand a chance.

00:01Coach Brianne: One of the questions we asked her was, how do you manage facing adversity? How do you manage when you get frustrated? And and you don't know what to do and you're starting to get into yellow or orange light, which is our light system that we use when we talk about our emotions. And she said, well, I learned because Coach Brianne taught me that when she gets frustrated, she takes a big deep breath and she resets. One time at practice, she was getting frustrated. She stopped the practice and she said, guys, I'm getting frustrated. I'm going to take a big deep breath. After my deep breath, I'm going to reset and we're going to move forward positively. And she brought up that moment and that meant so much to me because I'm an emotional person by the way, incase you didn't know. That meant so much to me because it's like a little moment that didn't mean a lot in the moment, but sorry. But it meant a lot to me now because those are the moments that we can hold on to every day when it gets tough.
01:23Coach Brianne: Thank you to everybody who's taking accountability for their excellence because I'm seeing some people marking like bobbles and stuff when you're in the air, but you recognize that that's not the excellence that we expect for the skill. So thank you for tracking appropriately. And. Last one. Let's get everybody in the air. That small moment where I was actually frustrated impacted an athlete in who they're going to become and how they're going to face life when things get hard.
02:01Coach Brianne: Sorry, I'm a baby. My kids know that too. They cry all the time. We're allowed to feel our feelings even when we have big ones.
02:19Coach Tianna: So, I've actually been in the industry for 17 years and all 17 of those years have been with CheerCore. I wouldn't say it's my entire identity, but I would definitely say that it is a large part of T.
02:43Coach Brianne: Can I actually have somebody demo, T? Can you demo?
02:45Coach Brianne: You good to demo? Okay. Box jumps. hold if you're a friend hold this because it's a little bit unsturdy.
03:11Coach Tianna: Currently in the season, we are building up our skills for choreography. then our choreographers will come in and they will create these amazing stories and pictures for our routines. So right now we're really focused on the team building, ensuring that we're building up the skills that are required of the athletes. So that when our choreographers come in, they're ready to go.
03:35Coach Brianne: What a lot of people think is cheerleaders are this image that they have in their head of ‘rah rah’ pom poms and cheering on another team. but really it's a full contact sport. we are incredibly athletic. You're lifting human beings. So we lift weights because we believe that we need to prepare the body, we need to make the body strong so that we can learn the skill more efficiently and safely. [coaching count in background: "Five, seven, at one, two, three, four, five, chest, seven."]
04:06Coach Tianna: We focus a lot on building consistency, with the same groups, the same people working together because when it gets to grind time, for competition season, one miss of a millimeter can result in a stunt fall or it can result in a missed skill and our goal is to ensure that the athletes feel adequately prepared. So, working together consistently, ensuring that we are focusing on the technique and the strength, when the choreographers come with a new innovation, it's like our kids already have the foundations in order to accomplish what they're trying to achieve of them. So the story that they create is easily done because we've already built, we've built the, the athlete to be able to do the the cool.
05:02Coach Tianna: It can be chaotic. We're building routines, we're bringing in outside choreographers. We have lots of things we're piecing together, but regardless of all of that, our main focus is always just building the great humans.
05:18Coach Brianne: I mean, at the end of the day, the byproduct is cheerleading, which is cool. Like we love cheerleading, that's why we're here. I've been doing it forever and I'm really passionate about the sport, the progressions in the sport and like helping athletes become their best version of themselves as an athlete, but more importantly, the best version of themselves as a human.
05:34Coach Brianne: The life lessons that we get to teach the kids are far and away the most important thing that we do. I know that from my journey in sport and my journey in cheerleading that I can — I have moments in my life where I can reflect on difficult moments or successful moments that help guide me in making choices in life, and I attribute a lot of those life lessons to cheerleading. So it's really cool being able to see that in the kids and having those moments where you can actually see it shaping that child and how they're perceiving things or how they're managing, a road block or having to persevere through something hard or that, you know, big sigh of relief at the end of a journey that took them so long to get there and it's a celebration, but it's also a — a reflection on every single step that got them there and being able to celebrate that with the kid, and seeing how that shapes them is so rewarding and really why we do what we do.
06:43Coach Tianna: This is my favorite place to be. it's the place that I come when I need to escape everything else. It's the place that I come when I need a hug or I need support or gosh. this is my home. I've actually had a really rough past couple of weeks and, coming to the gym has helped me kind of just forget about life and the world and I can come here and be with people that love me and people that I love and do what I love. So yes, coming to work is my favorite part of my day.
